Help to translate Malinke song

Postby ryukusu » Mon 7 Dec 2015 14:46

Hello everyone. I would like to ask you to help me with translation of this song:
Wes Madiko - Yake Yake.
I like this song and learned from a Cameroonian that lyrics is in Malinke language but I don't know this language and I've tried one Malinke to French dictionary but cannot find the text.
In the "Learn Malinke.pdf" file I cannot find word "yake", but I found this:
"Alla a noya ke", which means "May God make you better (illness)"
I agree with "a noya ke" but hear it like "a-na-na-ya-ke-ha-ha" (sorry, don't know how to write it correctly).
If you like to help me I can try to gather what I hear or there is a mp3 file of this song.

Bonjour à tous. Je voudrais vous demander de me aider à la traduction de cette chanson:
Wes Madiko - Yake Yake.

Hi ryukusu !

Clearly, i'm not a specialist in malinke language. I listened few minutes the song you shared and I think the lyrics are not exactly what you proposed. I think the phrase is more like "An allah yaka" or something like that. But, I can't tell you the meaning of this ... i'm sorry. I hope some members will be able to answer you.

Bye !

Thank you Mike.
Looks like this is exactly what I missed. I thought that it "yake" not "yaka".
Now I decide to split all words on syllables, because even if I don't know the word I will be able to find a word with it. Also I will read more Malinke grammar. Using it I was able to find that "ya ke" probably means "Do [something] there, spend your time there", while "ya ka" probably means "cut there".
I will share results when they are complete.

Somehow I stopped the translation. I don't know when I will continue my work.
But I've contacted Wes Madiko and asked him to help me with that. For now I will wait until he responds.
And here are the lyrics and some translation in English:

a na na ya ka (your future depends on you now. literally: you decide your future rightnow)

a na na ya ka ho-ho-ho
a na na ya ka ho-ho wele

1.
a no wo o wa te o
a no wo o wa te
bi ka la bi de mi le ne
bi ka la bi te mi le ne wo ke

a na na ya ka ho-ho-ho
a na na ya ka ho-ho wele

2.
a no o wo o wa te o
a no wo o wa te
bi ka la bide mi le ne
bi ka la bi te mi le ne wo ke o

a na na ya ka ho-ho-ho
a na na ya ka ho-ho wele

no ya ku, no ya ku (how could you be so dirty? // swim! swim!)
kunda ki pa (jump! jump!)
no bisa no bisa no bisa (do physical exercises! (with rods))
no staka no staka no staka (it worth to do that)
aha bon ku pe bon ku pe (mon kupe?) (pour cold water on you)
cho ola dzhan, aha
a

gere pede bagu le (it will be bad for you)
wolap (dance/develop)
bombara madan
bafun - bafun (do it now)
do bisa do bisa do bisa (take the rod!)
